Hi Kate,

Thanks for sharing your experience with your business and for highlighting the important distinction between strategies to reach a destination and the destination itself. How exciting that you've found a fresh perspective and are filled with energy and fun!

Hi Janice,
I'll pick up on your point about disengaging and re-engaging, specifically in a business context. The big picture goals - particularly the money ones - are often very clear, and we have a sub-set of goals (strategies) that will help us achieve them. For example perhaps we want to increase sales 20% this year and have decided to add a new product or service in order to achieve this. Sometimes the strategy just doesn't seem to work out and we can't get traction in that area, but it's so easy to become attached to that goal.

I recently experienced this in my business; there was a part of it that I was completely committed to including in my services, but rather than giving me an edge I was just not getting traction in this area. The harder I worked, the more frustrated I became.

Eventually, I let go of the goal of developing a particular part of (what I thought were) my services and started to collaborate with a colleague in this area. Rather than give up on my overall goal, I let go of a strategy and as soon as I did this found a fresh perspective and energy. Letting go has created space for new ideas and opportunities. I've no need to ruminate about the past because I'm moving forward with my journey and having a lot more fun.

It can be tempting to see giving up on a strategy as a sign that the whole journey won't work out, but really the destination hasn't changed - we've just hit a roadblock, and what's to be done is explore a little till we find a new route.
